The red poppy is used for Memorial Day in the United States, becoming a powerful symbol of remembrance after World War I - Lives lost to war. The tradition comes from the famous 1915 poem "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian soldier and physician John McCrae, which describes how red poppies grew over the graves of soldiers in the battlefields of Flanders (a region in Belgium).
Inspired by McCrae’s poem, an American woman named Moina Michael began promoting the idea of wearing red poppies to honor fallen soldiers. The poppy was later adopted by organizations like the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) as an official symbol of remembrance. Volunteers often distribute paper poppies on Memorial Day to raise funds for veterans' programs and to honor those who died in military service.
